Qualification Summary

Overview:

The Northern Ireland Social Care Council worked with representatives from across the social care sector to review and co-produce this updated Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Northern Ireland) qualification in 2024.

The Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Northern Ireland) builds upon the knowledge attained through a practitioner’s successful completion of the Level 2 Certificate in Safe and Effective Practice (Level 2 Certificate).

This social care qualification consists of eleven mandatory units, including the seven units making up the Level 2 Certificate. The additional four, knowledge and competence, units are detailed below:

• Understanding Communication, Recording and Information Sharing in Health and Social Care Services
• Implementing Values-led Practice in a Health and Social Care Context
• Adhering to health and safety requirements in a Health and Social Care Context
• Continuing professional development and reflective practice in Health and Social Care  

NB The Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Northern Ireland) can also be undertaken as a stand-alone qualification, that builds on knowledge gained through a practitioner’s successful completion of their induction.

NB: Your employer will be able to offer you advice about whether you are in a role that will enable you to gather the 'naturally occurring evidence' (inclusive of direct observations of practice) to complete this work-based qualification i.e. that the tasks you undertake, as part of your job role, will enable you to meet all of the evidence requirements for the Level of qualification that you are studying.

Highlights:

Following review and re-development with sector representatives, the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Northern Ireland) has gone forward for:

• Accreditation by CCEA Regulation
• Approval for use by Awarding Organisations
• Addition to the Level 2 Health and Social Care Apprenticeship NI Framework
